John Gallen is a documentary filmmaker based in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Georgetown University where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Government and Wake Forest University where he received a Master of Fine Arts in Documentary Film. He studied under Hoop Dreams co-creator Peter Gilbert. John created the award-winning documentary Daddy, which tells the story of beloved youth basketball coach and duplicitous drug trafficker Curtis Malone. The film includes interviews with a prison inmate, professional athletes, and law enforcement officials. It has screened at festivals across the country including the Brooklyn Film Festival, Hollyshorts Film Festival, and San Luis Obispo International Film Festival. The trailer has over 250,000 views on social media. John is committed to telling engaging character-driven stories that challenge our perspective. He has worked on scripted and documentary series for CBS, National Geographic, Disney+, and Netflix. His freelance work has appeared on SLAM and Showtime. He serves as a screener for the Brooklyn Film Festival and juror for the Underexposed Film Festival.
